Tomasz - The Great Gatsby (Ch. 1-5)

1. Identify and briefly define important words terms, concepts, or characters.

Nick Carraway: He is the narrator of the story, he went to Yale University, and fought in World War I. After the war, he moved to New York City to pursue a carrier in bonds.

Daisy Buchanan: Nick Carraway cousin, and wife of Tom Buchanan. She dated Jay Gatsby before the war. She knows about her husband affair.

Tom Buchanan: Rich Husband of Daisy Buchanan who went to Yale with Nick Carraway. He has an affair with a woman from New York. He is well built, and very arrogant

Jordan Baker: She is a daisy’s friend who plays golf. Nick meets her for the first time at Buchanan’s house. She develops a close relationship with Nick

Jay Gatsby: A wealthy man who lives next to Nick. Nick dislikes everything Gatsby represents. Gatsby fell in love with daisy before the war, and his feeling remain the same after many years.

2. Summarize the main idea, theme, action, or event of the reading. Be sure to include quotation that best captures the overall felling or mood of the reading.

One of the themes from the reading was that pursue of monetary wealth does not make you happy. Dishonesty and greed play an important role in this book. Old good merits are a thing of the past. Distrust and suspicions are plentiful throughout the book. A good example of this theme was with a quote “Tom got some woman in New York” said by Jordan Baker

3. Formulate a question for discussion. The question should be relatively substantial, based upon a specified passage or scene from the text, and capable of sustaining a thoughtful discussion.

Do you think that Gatsby drive to become rich was fueled by the obsession of getting Daisy back? Even if it meant breaking the law along the way?

I disagree with you when you said that Nick dilikes Gatsby. I don't think Nick dislikes him, he seems to be very fond of Gatsby and seems to show no problem with his relationship with Daisy.

I think that Gatsby was getting caught up in the American dream and therefore went above and beyond to become rich. The fact that he loves Daisy and wants her back didn't force him to become rich. There is proof for this from the scene in the closet. Gatsby throws his expensive shirts all over the floor just proving to Daisy that wealth is everything.

correction: wealth IS NOT everything!!

It seems like Gatsby is obsessed with both wealth and love. He was a bootlegger, probably that was an easy way to accumulate the wealth in a short period of time, and he loved Daisy seriously as we have seen from his saying to Nick after the car accident that he would say that he was driving. I think Gatsby was dreaming for what was not possible to obtain. -Kristen

I believe Gatsby drive to become rich was fueled by the obsession of getting Daisy back because then why he was so motivated of being rich? And showing Daisy all these luxurious things that she like? If he was fueled by it, he would still be a janitor or nameless guy.

If he wasn't* fueled by it, he would still be a janitor or nameless guy.

I think the American dream itself and love toward Daisy are both the driving force for Gatsby. The love is the motivation for becoming rich. To Gatsby, bootlegging is the shortcut to move him form poverty to rich class since he has no solid wealthy background.

After Gatsby lost Daisy, she became the driving force in his life. Everything he did was for the improved chance that he might impress Daisy and convince her to leave Tom in favor of him. He has shown that he would go to any extent for this.

I think Gatsby wants to get Daisy back after he gets reach. There is one scene in the book that Daisy tells Gatsby the reason why she didn't wait him several years before was she couldn't not marry poor man. So I think Gatsby wants to become reach because of getting Daisy back.

I believe so, I think Gatsby drive to become rich because he believed this is the only way that he can get Daisy back. From the beginning they met, Gatsby already realized that difference between Daisy and him was family background. Daisy was from rich family and he was poor, so to be able get Daisy he has to become rich too. I think Gatsby is more obsessed by love because his motive getting rich is to get Daisy back.

I do think that Gatsby did not care about breaking the law while he was getting rich. He knew he had no chance with Daisy if he was poor. So he was determined and fueled by his goal of getting Daisy. Perhaps Gatsby may also not have seen what he was doing as the wrong thing to do.
