From Eliana - The Great Gatsby

  1. Important words:

Notoriety- referring to Gatsby; everyone knows him and about him because of the lavish parties that he throws at his mansion for anyone that is interested.

Unpleasantness/Oppressiveness- referring to the aura of Gatsby’s party this time due to Tom’s presence.

Concepts:

Past vs. Present- the chapter starts off and ends with the past and we have the present moment smack in the middle of the chapter. It starts with Gatsby’s past and ends with Daisy and Gatsby’s past as lovers.

Characters:

Gatsby- his real name is James Gatz, he grew up with his parents who were unsuccessful farmers and he changed his name to Jay Gatsby at age 17. He tries very hard in this chapter to impress Daisy, at one of his gracious parties, just like he did five years ago when they were in love.

Tom- shows up with Daisy for the first time at Gatsby’s party, which ruins it for Gatsby because he really wanted to spend a lot of time with her.

  1. The chapter starts off with Gatsby’s past together with Dan Cody on a yacht. It continues into the present bringing us to one of Gatsby’s parties. This time though, Tom is present which is not what Gatsby had hoped for considering he was trying really hard to astound Daisy. We are taken back into the past to the time when Gatsby and Daisy first kissed. The best quotation that gives the chapter the overall feeling of failing and sadness is “I’m going to fix everything just the way it was before” (Fitzgerald, 117). This quote was said by Gatsby referring to the way things were with Daisy five years ago.

  1. Question: relating to the first few pages of the text in this chapter, why do you think Gatsby changed his name from James Gatz to Jay Gatsby?

James Gatz was borned in a poor and low social status family, he decided to change his name after meeting Dan cody who is a millionairess. He wanted to rebuild his life as prosperous and weathy, so he changed his name into Jay Gatsby. It just seemed like a "rebirth" with hope and future.

I think Jay Gastby changed his name to make it seem as if he was in the upper class rather than the lower class his family was known for. He wanted to be known for his high achievements and so he changed his name not to be known for his family's life but for the new one he has created for himself.

I think that Gatsby changed his name because he was ashamed of his background. He did not want people to know that he came from a poor family. He adopted the new name, Jay Gatsby, to appear to be rich; and later in life, he used this name to join the wealthy society of West Egg.

James Gatz changed to Jay Gatsby because James Gatz was raised up poor and didn't have anything especially money, house, and education. He changed his identity to Jay Gatsby because he starts to become rich and had thrown luxurious parties. And people knew him from the present and not the past.

Gatsby changed his name because he wanted to hide his past. He did not want people to recognize him as a poor person who got rich from doing illegal things. His new name sounds more American thus it helps him a lot in the process of transformation into the upper class.

Gatsby was poor when he had the name of James Gatz, and he lost Daisy. So he changed his name to Jay Gatsby. He just wanted a new life with the new name, forgot everything from the past. He also became rich after he used the name of Jay Gatsby.

Gatsby changes his name to forget his past and be able to start all over again. James Gatz was the sun of an unsuccessful farmer; he did not want to be remembered this way. He hated being poor and everything that reminds him of his past life. He changes his name to be able to fit in this high society.
